CO2 Remaining Estimator
Enter your cylinder’s tare weight (TW) and what it weighs right now. This estimates how many pounds (or kg) of CO2 you have left. Because gauges are optimistic liars.
Calculator
Inputs
If your cylinder says “TW 17.6” and the scale says 28.2, then remaining CO2 is 28.2 − 17.6 = 10.6 lb.

Pro tip: for CO2 cylinders, pressure often stays fairly steady until late in the tank’s life. Weight is the reliable signal.
Where to find tare weight (TW)
Tare weight is the empty cylinder weight. It’s usually stamped on the neck/shoulder of the tank as TW. If you can’t find it, you can still estimate remaining gas, but the result will be less reliable.
Typical markings
- TW (tare weight)
- Sometimes also: manufacture dates / test info
- Painted or stamped varies by cylinder
If TW is missing
- Ask your supplier if they know the tare for that cylinder type
- Or weigh the cylinder when you know it’s empty (after it’s safely fully vented/used)
- Exchange pool tanks can have different tare weights even at the same “size”
Exchange reality
- Exchange tanks: you may get a different cylinder each time
- Always re-check TW on the cylinder you receive
- Sticker + stamped values can differ; stamped wins
Tips to avoid “why is it empty already?”
Leak sanity check
- If your tank drains way faster than expected, suspect a leak first.
- Soapy water on connections: bubbles = leak.
- Common spots: cylinder nut, regulator joints, needle valve, bubble counter cap/O-ring.
Track your burn rate
- Weigh the tank once per week for a month.
- Enter your “units per month” into the tool to get a rough runtime estimate.
- Big unexpected changes usually mean: leak, changed settings, or different cylinder.

FAQ
Why doesn’t my CO2 gauge tell me how much is left?
CO2 cylinders can maintain similar pressure through much of the tank’s life.
The gauge is great for “is it pressurized?” but not great as a fuel gauge.
Weight is the reliable method.
What if I’m using exchange tanks?
Exchange tanks can have different tare weights. Always re-check the TW on the specific cylinder you received.
Can I use kg instead of lb?
Yes. Switch units to kg and enter your weights in kg. The tool will keep everything consistent.
How do I find a CO2 supplier near me?
Use the directory and map, and call ahead to confirm refill vs exchange policies:

Need a refill or exchange?
Use the directory and call checklist to confirm policies before you drive.
